Global beer export sales by country represented  totaled US$13.2 billion in 2016, up by 3% since 2012. The value of global beer export sales accelerated by 3.2% from 2015 to 2016. European countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of exported beer during 2016 with shipments valued at $8.1 billion, 61.4% of the global total. In second place were North American exporters at 26.7% while 8.2% of worldwide beer shipments originated from Asia. Smaller percentages originated from Latin America (excluding Mexico) at 2%.

Competitive Landscape:
Statistics show the fastest-growing beer exporter since 2012 was Spain with its 81.3% gain in value. In second place was Poland with a 48.8 % gain, followed by the United States up by 37%, China up  by 36.5% and Mexico up by 21.2%. Mexico has the highest surplus in the international trade of beer. This positive cashflow confirms the strong Mexican competitive advantage for this specific product category. The United States incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of beer. This negative cash flow highlights America’s competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for beer-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.

Craft Beer :
According to the Brewers Association, in 2017 U.S. beer volume sales were down 1%, whereas craft brewer sales continued to grow at a rate of 5% by volume, reaching 12.7% of the U.S. beer market by volume. Craft production grew the most for microbreweries. Retail dollar sales of craft increased 8%, up to $26.0 billion, and now account for more than 23% of the $111.4 billion U.S. beer market.
